Darwin was the sweetest, most gentle Beagle ever…. We rescued Darwin from a rural Riverside shelter where he had ended up as a stray. He looked ancient, at least 13 or 14 years old and without any chance of being adopted due the pendulous skin tumors hanging off him, the terrible smell from his bacterial skin infection, yeast and middle ear infections. Through all of his suffering he was a happy, friendly boy and his tail wagged at any attention given to him. His condition was purely due to neglect and took him years to get to this state. We can only imagine his suffering. Our Vet aged him at around 7 to 8 year age range. We immediately started an aggressive course of antibiotics, medicated baths and nutritious food (he was also underweight) but the skin infection and allergies were too great. His liver was compromised and he started having Grand-Mal seizures. We felt it best that Darwin should be allowed to cross the Rainbow Bridge with dignity and love and he was gently put to sleep surrounded by people who had fallen in love with him during the short time he was with us. We loved your gentle, loving spirit Darwin. 09-28-2011
Byron was rescued from a high kill LA County shelter where he had been left on a cold, rainy night tied to the chain link fence until he was found in the morning by the incoming Animal Control Officer. He was running out of time at the shelter and listed for the euthanasia list when we rescued him. Unfortunately, he had a host of gastrointestinal issues that were insurmountable and we had to make the very painful decision to let him cross the Rainbow Bridge. We miss you so much, our loving, bouncy Byron. 05-21-2011
Linus was rescued from the Kern County Shelter, where he was listed as a 10 year old senior dog needing a severe dental. He already had a microchip implanted, but it had not been registered to an Owner. The microchip led back to The Hunte Corporation out of Missouri, which is a huge puppy mill operation, shipping 2,500 dogs a week across country. The micro-chip also confirmed Linus’s age at 3 years old. He had been born in 2007. Being a puppy mill dog we pulled a blood panel and had x-rays done. We learned that Linus was very sick with a congential heart disease. We still gave him a much needed dental and made him comfortable but knew he was not adoptable. He “hung out” with us, going to Meet & Greet events where he was quite happy to get as many cuddles as possible. He was a quiet soul who loved everyone. In October his health took a turn for the worst and with Veterinary advise that his time had come, we allowed him to gracefully cross the Rainbow Bridge. In three years he had experienced much, born at a puppy mill, shipped across county, probably at the tender age of six weeks of age to sit in a glass cage in a pet shop, and then cast aside when his medical conditions started to impact him, and ending up in a high kill shelter. He was very disposable to all he met, except for us but due to his overwhelming medical conditions, were unable to let him continue to suffer. Rest In Peace our little tan Chihuahua. We loved you. 10-20-2010
Little, loving Felix was rescued from a high kill shelter where he had ended up as a stray. Even though he was not looking his best, his wonderful loving, gentle personality won us over and we wanted to give him a chance at a new life. He had obviously not seen the gentler side of human kind or been given appropriate veterinary care in his short three years of life. We took him to our Vet and started antibiotics for his skin infection and had a blood panel and urinalysis done to see how things were working on the inside. While we waited for the results we started him on a nutritious meal plan and supplements. Unfortunately his blood and urinalysis results were not what we wanted to hear and this little fellow was suffering and slowly dying. He blood and urine showed extreme levels of calcium oxide. The skin condition, fish breath, trembling, uncoordinated movements, spasms towards his back end and convulsions were a direct result of this diagnosis. With no cure, and Felix in pain, we had no option but to release his little soul knowing he had been loved by us if only for a couple of weeks. To some who made comments on FaceBook he was a haggard little dog but to us he was a little dog who appreciated everything we gave him – especially unconditional love. Miss Nina was abandoned in a little cardboard box at our local PetCO store. She was very scared and shivering in fright when the Assistant Store Manager, Amy called our rescue to see if we would take her in. After our Vet checked her out, she seemed healthy enough to undergo a spay, dental and vaccinations. Her blood work did not show any health issues and she was recovering well from her surgery. She had been bred numerous times in her short little life as her uterus was paper thin and very flaccid from giving birth so often. Unfortunately, she must have been exposed to parvo and a week after her surgery she came violently ill and within 12 hours passed away. If Nina had been given the appropriate puppy vaccines she would have never had to have given her life to such a horrible illness. She was no doubt a back yard breeder dog who had never been given good nutrition or veterinary care – just seen as a way to make money. We wished we could have given you a new life. Miss Scarlette, a tiny 3-lbs little Chihuahua was rescued from a high-kill shelter, severely emaciated, with an extreme case of demodex mange and in need of being spayed. A dental was also in order, even though she was only 18 months old. Due to poor nutrition, her lack of nutrients had caused some dental disease during her short little life. Through all of this adversity, she had a sunny, happy and loving personality. She went through her dental and spay surgery well. She showed absolute delight in having the itching stop from her mange, by very generous donation from Fort Dodge’s Southern CA Representative of Promeris, Fort Dodge’s product that has excellent results in the treatment of demodex mange. Unfortunately, Scarlette’s renal system was shutting down from a congenital defect. She began to exhibit signs of this disease very rapidly and after consultation with our Veterinary expert, and an ultrasound, blood and urinalysis, Scarelette’s only option would have been a kidney transplant. Knowing she was in pain and it was only going to get worse, the decision was made to allow her to cross the Rainbow Bridge gracefully, and with dignity. She stole many hearts during her short time as an OCPoundhound. She is missed…… Crossed the Rainbow Bridge Gracefully 10-9-2009
Corky, the Corgi mix was not with OCPoundhounds very long but he stole a lot of hearts with his cheerful demeanour and continuously wagging tail. His Foster-Mum adored him and he accompanied her to school, where he was a hit with the children, regardless of the fact he was totally blind. He became very ill very quickly and was helped over the Rainbow Bridge with dignity so he did not have to suffer. We loved you Corky….and you stole a piece of everyone’s heart who knew you.. Rest in peace…. Crossed the Rainbow Bridge Gracefully 8-23-2009
